We live in a time riddled with strife, chaos, and hatred. With so much happening in our day-to-day lives, it’s easy to feel swept up, overwhelmed, and hopeless. The 988 “Press 3” LGBTQ+ Lifeline Will Be Shut Down on July 17, 2025. In July 2022, SAMHSA (the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) partnered with The Trevor Project to launch “Press 3” — a specialized LGBTQ+ option on the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, offering 24/7 crisis support from trained, affirming counselors. In under 2 years, more than 1.3 million LGBTQ+ youth have used this line. Nearly 40% of callers said they would not have felt safe using the generic 988 line. Up to 45% of LGBTQ+ youth have seriously considered suicide in the past year (Trevor Project 2024 Survey). For trans and nonbinary youth, the figure rises to over 54%. And yet — the federal government is cutting this service. On July 17, 2025, the “Press 3” option will be removed from the national lifeline, due to the end of dedicated federal funding and a shift away from identity-specific crisis routing. This decision comes amid over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced just this year. 20+ states have banned or restricted gender-affirming care for youth. 38% of LGBTQ+ youth say their home is not affirming. And still, LGBTQ+ youth are being told to “just use the regular hotline.” But generic crisis lines do not guarantee cultural competency. They don’t ensure a trauma-informed response for youth navigating anti-trans policies, familial rejection, religious trauma, or homelessness. Removing “Press 3” removes trust. It removes access. It removes a lifeline.

Together, we gave away handmade trinkets and charms, facilitated shrink-a-dink making & clay craft painting, led discussions on the connection between water, sound, the color blue, and emotional wellbeing, alongside hosting 3 youth & adult meditation sessions. Our work today has been tremendously rewarding, and we are excited to jumpstart initiatives in upcoming summits!

What is Art Therapy? How does it work? Why is it important? Scientifically; Similar to standard conventions of therapy, Art Therapy functions upon the stimulation of multiple brain regions, including the prefrontal cortex (charged with governing decision-making and neuroregulation), the amygdala (channeling emotional and stress responses), and the parietal lobes (involved in spatial and visual processing). Beyond activation of these regions, the action artistic creation promotes neuroplasticity, the brains ability to rewire and establish neural connections–which can prove essential in overcoming trauma and finding new coping mechanisms in regulating mental illness and/or emotional wellbeing. In the process of creating art, we also channel a system within our brain named the reward system. This system triggers the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of pleasure and motivation. This release not only fosters a sense of accomplishment but also counteracts symptoms of anxiety and depression, making art therapy a powerful tool for improving mental health and processing emotional regulation. Let's talk emotional wellness! What is it? How is it attained? Well, there are key components to regulating your emotional state of being: some of which (shown) include self-regulation, optimism, empowerment & agency, alongside cognitive flexibility. Self-regulation refers to the ability to manage and control one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in the face of challenges, goals, or stress. Effective self-regulation allows individuals to manage stress, respond to emotional triggers in healthy ways, and pursue goals in alignment with their values. Optimism, often associated with positive affectivity, refers to the tendency to experience positive emotions and to engage with the world in a joyful, enthusiastic way. It’s closely linked to emotional wellness and mental health--a telling feeling that drives perspectival shifts upon life and promotes boosted morale. Empowerment and agency are two characteristics crucial for emotional well-being. They provide individuals with a sense of purpose, autonomy, and control. They're indicative of how we are enabled to pursue our passions, the things we love, and what we feel makes us, us, despite external circumstances. Cognitive flexibility is the mental ability to switch between different concepts, adapt to new information, and adjust behaviors in response to changing environments. Both are interconnected and crucial for psychological well-being. It enables individuals to navigate emotional challenges more effectively, fostering resilience and emotional balance.
